PEB vs RCC for factory buildings in Bangladesh: cost, time and foundations

Garments, textile, pharmaceutical and FMCG factories across Gazipur, Savar, Narayanganj and Chattogram face the same early decision: build the shed in RCC or as a pre-engineered steel building (PEB)?

What a PEB is

A PEB uses built-up tapered steel frames (columns and rafters) designed for the exact loads, cold-formed Z or C purlins and girts, and colour-coated roof and wall sheeting. Members are fabricated in a factory and bolted together on site.

Cost

For single-storey sheds with large clear spans, the PEB structure is usually cheaper than an RCC frame, and its foundation is much lighter because steel weighs a fraction of concrete. Indicatively:

RCC frame PEB
Structure (BDT/sft) ~3,400 ~2,500
Foundation (BDT/sft) ~650 ~380

Values depend on span, eave height, crane loads, wind and seismic zone. EstiMatrix's PEB vs RCC optimizer (Material Swapper → Compare with Prime Base PEB solution) lets you try area, height and span.

Time

Steel is fabricated while foundations are built, and erection is fast: a PEB shed often reaches production in about half the time of an RCC frame — a direct saving in interest and lost production.

Spans and flexibility

  • PEB clear spans of 30–60 m (100–200 ft) without internal columns are routine.
  • Extensions are simple: add bays at the end wall.
  • Mezzanines and crane runways can be integrated.

When RCC still wins

  • Multi-storey buildings with heavy floor loads;
  • fire-rated or chemical-exposure areas without adequate protection;
  • very small sheds where steel's fixed costs dominate.

Many factories end up hybrid: RCC for multi-storey office and utility blocks, PEB for production halls and warehouses.

Estimating a PEB in EstiMatrix

Structural-steel items switch to a steel take-off: sections from a table (ISMB, ISMC, angles, purlins, hollow sections) or plates by length × width × thickness at 7,850 kg/m³, giving kg or MT directly. Add anchor bolts, base plates, primer painting, sheeting and the RCC pedestals and floor.
